Sedona Interludes

Head up from Phoenix to Flagstaff and you’ll run into the famous arts and spa town of Sedona. Surrounded by red rock buttes and stunning vistas, no trip through Arizona is complete without a stop. While it may be best known for its eclectic shops, galleries, and luxury retreats, Sedona also boasts picturesque hiking trails and overlooks that explode with color as the sun sets.

We passed on the full spa experience this time (staying focused on #VanLife), but Sondra did hit up a local day spa while I wandered out in search of a good trail. I found Devils Bridge Trail just north of town, which I can’t recommend highly enough. My one tip for anyone attempting this hike, don’t try to enter on the main road (Dry Creek Rd.) as it will almost certainly will be packed with cars and you’ll end up doing half the hike down a less than scenic road. For a better hike (and ample parking) go over to Long Canyon Rd. and park at the Mescal Trailhead. This eventually connects to the Devils Bridge Trail and also adds an incredible scenic approach.

The hike concludes, not surprisingly, at the Devil’s Bridge, an arch 54 feet above the ground that you can dangle off of and get incredible 360 views of the surrounding red rock buttes. The only downside of this trail are the sheer number of people, especially at the end…so wait until you’re vaccinated to fully enjoy this hike.

Oak Creek Canyon

A few miles (and several stunning highway switchbacks) north of Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon, often described as the smaller cousin of the Grand Canyon. Located in the Coconino Forest, the canyon is indeed breathtaking. As with anything this vast the pictures simply don’t do it justice - but take our word for it, it’s worth the trip. The overlook is also home to the Native American Artisan Market, a group of Native American arts and craft vendors who set up shop along the overlook trails. The crafts are gorgeous (Sondra purchased two pairs of earrings and some other odds and ends) and it’s great way to support local communities while enjoying this stunning region.
