Day 52: A lovely Saturday at Capitol Reef National Park

National Park #21

Sandwiched between its more well known neighbors, Capitol Reef may not have the wow factor of Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, or Arches, but it does have excellent pie.

Nearing the end of our trip, we needed a relaxing Saturday to recover from the intensity of Yosemite and Zion. Capitol Reef provided.

The reason Capitol Reef is a National Park is because of the “waterpocket fold” which is basically (geologists don’t @ me) 100 miles of a sheer rock cliff that was raised up a loooong time ago. It can be beautiful at parts, but the striking thing about it is its length which is hard to take in from one particular viewpoint.

While we can’t say we thoroughly explored the park, we did have incredible home made pie at the Gifford Homestead, set up hammocks in a nearby orchard, and hiked the scenic Cohab Canyon for good measure.

All parks should come with pie.

All parks should come with pie.

It was a lovely day. Capitol Reef is gorgeous in its own right and certainly deserves more exploration…but on this Sunday, we rested. And hammocked. And ate pie.

As God intended.

What you need to know:

  • As mentioned above, we really didn’t properly explore this park. But it’s certainly beautiful and the few trail we did do like Cohab Canyon were top notch.

  • Make sure you get here early enough to get the home made pies from the Gifford Homestead. If you get there early enough, you can even get Cinnamon rolls (We sadly didn’t).

  • Cell service was mostly non-existent - but that was fine for a nice relaxing Sunday.
