Blake’s Lotaburger: An Underdog Story

Ask anyone what the best regional burger chain is and you’ll likely hear about In-N-Out, Whataburger, Culvers, and the occasional Jack in the Box. But as our friends from New Mexico can tell you, there is another contender here that punches well above its weight. Blake’s Lotaburger may sound like a knock off of “Whataburger,” but their sandwiches are anything but. In fact, at the risk of (or in hopes of) starting a fight with my lone star friends, Blake’s is just simply the better burger. The bun is fresher, the burgers meatier, and the green chilies take it all to the next level. This is a burger you owe it to yourself to try next time you’re near New Mexico.

As we did at Whataburger, we also tried Blake’s friend chicken sandwich. Again we were fairly impressed. It doesn’t come within 12 city blocks of being healthy, but it’s definitely one of the tastier chicken sandwiches we’ve tried.

While still not matching the midwestern magnificence that is Culvers, Blake’s Lotaburger surprised us in all the right ways and belongs on the expanded Mount Rushmore of specialty burger chains.

Our Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Culverses.
